Is there a best way to drink water? It’s probably not something you give much thought to other than trying to drink enough each day, but there are theories and practices relating to this question. We’ve looked before at the best times of day to drink water and how often you should drink water throughout the day, but in this blog, we’ll look at a specific practice – Japanese water therapy.

What is Japanese water therapy?

Japanese water therapy is a specific set of rules surrounding consumption of water and food, particularly first thing in the morning. It is thought to have been popularized in Japanese medicine. It involves drinking room temperature water on an empty stomach every morning before you eat anything, and even before brushing your teeth.

More specifically, you should drink 4-5 glasses of water before breaking your fast by eating. You must then wait 45 minutes after drinking this amount of water before you eat breakfast. At breakfast, you should eat for no longer than 15 minutes, and then wait at least 2 hours before eating or drinking anything else.

The water you drink must be room temperature because it is thought that cold water hardens any oils and fats in your digestive system, making it bad for your health, although there isn’t any scientific evidence to prove this.

FDA and Bottled Water

There are so many different brands and types of bottled water lined up on the shelf when you go into the store. Is there a difference between all these bottles of water? How do you know which to choose and, more importantly, how do you know that you’re actually getting what’s advertised? There are occasionally concerns over the safety of bottled water and the question of whether it’s simply bottled tap water. But bottled water is regulated by the FDA (The United States Food and Drug Administration) just like other drinks, so let’s look at how this is controlled.

Bottled water regulations

According to the FDA website, the administration regulates bottled water under at least three different categories:

  • Standard of identity
  • Standard of quality
  • Current good manufacturing practice

These categories ensure that bottled water that’s available for purchase does not contain an excess of contaminants and is, therefore, safe for consumption, and also that the bottled water has been produced safely and under sanitary conditions.

What is in your bottled water?

Bottled water can come from a number of sources, including springs, wells, underground sources, and, yes, even the tap, i.e., municipal sources. However, it’s still not the same as the water poured directly from your tap as it will be treated in various ways before being bottled and reaching the shelves.

Under the FDA’s regulations, nothing can be added to bottled water other than a safe amount of antimicrobial agent for treating the water, and fluoride within safe limits as set out by the FDA. Depending on the source of your water, it will naturally contain trace amounts of various minerals, which can benefit your health in a number of ways. Methods of Distilling Water

There are a lot of different terms when it comes to something as simple as water, and it can be easy to get confused by the differences between them. We’ve compared spring water with purified water in the past, so now let’s look at distilled water, its properties, and how water is distilled.

What is distilled water?

Distilled water is similar to purified water in that it has had all or almost all of the impurities removed from it. This includes any minerals as well as bacteria and other contaminants. Distilled water could start from spring water or basic tap water, which then goes through a distillation process.

How is distillation achieved?

While purified water may go through various processes and treatments to remove the contaminants, distillation is a fairly simple process that you could even do yourself. Distilled water is that which has been evaporated, and then the water vapor has been collected once it condenses. This can be achieved through simple heating and cooling processes. You might see electrolytes mentioned on sports drinks or expensive bottled water, but what exactly are they and do you really need them to stay hydrated? Let’s look at some of the facts and theories behind electrolytes and hydration.

What are electrolytes?

An electrolyte is a particle that carries an electric charge and can conduct electricity when combined with water. In this context, we’re talking about essential minerals, such as sodium and potassium, that allow things like our muscle tissues and nerve cells to function properly.
