What is World Water Day?

We recently celebrated World Water Day, a global celebration that’s officially observed by the United Nations, which takes place on March 22nd every year and has done since 1993. If you want to find out more about World Water Day and what it means, then read on for more information.

What does World Water Day celebrate?

World Water Day is a day for education about and advocacy for sustainable practices when it comes to using water. It celebrates the importance of water in our everyday lives and what it means to us. It’s a chance to appreciate the fact that we have easy access to clean water while also planning ways in which we can save water and help less fortunate communities access clean water. It’s also a great opportunity to raise money and awareness for various freshwater causes.

Each year, a different theme is chosen for World Water Day to help guide activities and events. Here are some of the themes of recent years:

  • 2021 – Valuing water
  • 2020 – Water and climate change
  • 2019 – Leaving no one behind
  • 2018 – Nature for water
  • 2017 – Why waste water?
  • 2016 – Water and jobs
